In response to recent incidents of wildlife crime in the Mumbai area, a committee has been formed to monitor and coordinate efforts to combat this issue. Chaired by Clement Ben, the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), the committee comprises key personnel, including divisional forest officers, vigilance inspectors, and wildlife wardens from various districts. The circular, issued on October 6, mandates that the committee convenes at least once a month to enhance the monitoring and control of wildlife crime, including activities related to wildlife trade and illegal possession. The committee’s primary objective is to curb the rising trend of illegal wildlife trafficking, which has seen exotic and native species subjected to inhumane treatment and cruelty. Pawan Sharma, a wildlife warden, highlights the need for vigilance against this organized criminal activity, which threatens the region’s unique biodiversity.
